Read for Better Life Event: Baemo Book Store Working with the Rotary Club Foundation
The Read for Better Life event is an event run by our local Rotary Club foundation. Its mission is to improve literacy and reading within our community. A number of members in our community lack the access we have to basic reading materials in the local and English language. By engaging in this program, we are thereby contributing to the growth of learners in our community.
What was our role in this event? We were involved throughout the whole event. From the book reading to the gifting to the prize winners, we were present. In addition to that, we provided the gift hampers to the prize winner; these hampers were sponsored by Baemo Store. In addition to that, we gifted the little ones with one of our books from the new ESL series.

First of all, we introduced the Read for Better Life program to the school. A short introduction that highlights the importance of reading.
Afterwards, the children enjoyed themselves by listening to a reading of a book by the local Rotary Club President. The book was a local folk story known as the Legend of Lake Toba. This folktale gives history to the lake; it tells of a story of a farmer who caught a magical fish that turned into a beautiful woman. After they were married and had brought a son into the world. the farmer broke his promise of hiding the true origin of his wife by calling his son, Samosir, a fish’s son. This enraged his wife and it resulted in her flooding the area, resulting in the creation of Lake Toba. This was a great pick for the book reading because it dives into the history and culture of the country with a folktale.

After that, the kids were questioned about the story and the kids who could correctly answer the questions were rewarded with gift hampers. In this case, three kids were able to answer the questions correctly, resulting in them receiving hampers from Baemo Store.
The little ones also practiced with their communication skills by introducing themselves to their peers. Four kids had volunteered to introduce themselves and were given our English Learning Book as a gift; this is the newest addition to our ESL book series. These books from Baemo Store were meant to strengthen their understanding of the English language and develop confidence in the little one to speak English.
We ended the event by handing out worksheets to all the kids for them to be introduced to the early English language concepts such as alphabet, beginning sounds, and recognition of CVC words.
In the end, it could be observed that the school lacked the means and abilities to acquire such English resources. Unfortunately, this is the case for many similar schools - they lack the funds and resources in their English department. Knowing this, it was a pleasure to be able to contribute to the learning journey of children who love to learn, and we hope to continue doing so.
